A Padded Potty: Advantages of a Padded Toilet Seat
At first glance, this blog post probably triggered an eye roll and a shout of "FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS!!!" from our readers, and we understand that. Really, we do!
Padded toilet seats are obviously a more comfortable option since they offer some cushion, but there are actually some additional, legitimate advantages to these seats that we wanted to share with our readers. While we definitely agree that there are larger problems at hand than what type of toilet seat someone uses, we also think that some of these padded seat advantages are important in their own right for people who fit into the following categories...
Those with chronic pain and/or limited movement.
People who have limited movement due to injury or disease can benefit from the padded toilet seats that also have additional lift. This gives them the advantage of not having to sit down as far when visiting the restroom. A higher seat means less work and movement for them, resulting in lesser, or no, pain. Temperature is also a factor here. During the winter months, traditional hard toilet seats get incredibly cold, particularly when you live farther north. For those with chronic pain (such as those who suffer from arthritis) cold temperatures can trigger pain and cause some serious discomfort. That is NOT what you want to experience when you hit the bathroom in the morning!
Those who are disabled or elderly.
This category matches up with many of the advantages above. Those who are disabled in some way, or elderly, often have a harder time with lower toilet seats. The padded, lifted seats are a great option for them. Additionally, specially designed padded seats are available with upgrades like handles, arm-rests, back support, etc. These are very helpful not only for the person needing to use the toilet, but also for their caregivers offering support.
Young children (toilet training). Small children who are learning to use the toilet are often apprehensive. The size of "grown-up" potties, the noise from flushing, etc. can be terrifying to a little one. While you can purchase kid-sized potty chairs, they aren't always convenient. Padded seats, especially those designed specifically for small children, can be a great resource when toilet training. They come in fun colors and designs, some have handles for balance, and they can be easily removed after each visit to the restroom for cleaning and storage. Since they are padded, children are often more comfortable when having to sit on them for periods of time (let's face it...you are on the potty a LOT when toilet training...).
Padded seats are a great addition to your bathroom if you have family in any of the categories above. The best part is, they don't take any extra work or cost to install! They go onto the toilet just like a traditional seat, and they are around the same price range. They can be removed for cleaning as well, so there is no worry about inability to sanitize.
We hope this has helped show some love for the under appreciated padded toilet seats. Of course, if you want to upgrade more than just your toilet seat (like a whole new toilet!) call Dickens Plumbing. We can customize any space to meet all of your needs.
